The standard 1991 track listing of Metallica's self-titled album contains 12 songs.
The album opens with Enter Sandman and continues through Sad but True, Holier Than Thou, The Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, and Don't Tread on Me. The second half includes Through the Never, Nothing Else Matters, Of Wolf and Man, The God That Failed, My Friend of Misery, and The Struggle Within.
The sequence balances radio hits with heavier album tracks and closes with The Struggle Within. Unlike some later deluxe editions, the original studio album's standard sequence is a compact 12-track program running for about 62 minutes. Its songs combine direct structures with carefully layered guitar, bass, drum, and vocal production.
The number can cause confusion because anniversary editions and box sets include demos, live recordings, alternate mixes, and cover versions. Those expanded releases have far more than 12 tracks, but they do not change the count of the standard 1991 album. The vinyl presentation also divides the material across four sides, with three tracks on each side.
