What is the fourth track on Metallica’s Metallica, better known as The Black Album?

The story behind the answer

“The Unforgiven” is the fourth track on Metallica’s Metallica, better known as The Black Album.

The original sequence places “Enter Sandman” first, “Sad but True” second, “Holier Than Thou” third, and “The Unforgiven” fourth. That position makes it an early centerpiece of the album, following three songs built around heavy, direct riffing.

“The Unforgiven” differs from those opening tracks through its dramatic arrangement and ballad-like pacing. It became one of Metallica’s best-known songs and was released as the album’s second single in October 1991. Its lyrics explore control, regret, and the consequences of living according to other people’s expectations.

The title is also the source of later Metallica songs called “The Unforgiven II” and “The Unforgiven III.” Those sequels appeared on Reload and Death Magnetic, respectively, but neither is the fourth track on the 1991 album.
