How many siblings did Leo Tolstoy have?

The story behind the answer

Leo Tolstoy had four siblings.

He was the fourth of five children born to Count Nikolai Tolstoy and Countess Mariya Tolstaya. His siblings were Nikolai, Dmitry, Sergei, and Mariya. Tolstoy was the youngest son and the fourth child in the family.

The Tolstoy children grew up in the family’s aristocratic environment, centered on Yasnaya Polyana and other estates. Several of Tolstoy’s early memories of family life later influenced the domestic relationships and childhood perspectives in his fiction.

This fact is sometimes confused with the number of children Tolstoy himself had with Sofya Tolstaya. Those are separate family counts: Tolstoy had four siblings, while he and Sofya had thirteen children together.
