Three Rings of Power were made for the Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
The three Elven rings are Narya, Nenya, and Vilya. They were created by the Elven smith Celebrimbor in Eregion, although Sauron taught the craft used for the larger ring-making project. Unlike the other rings, the Three were made without Sauron’s direct touch, so they were not immediately corrupted by his hand.
Narya became associated with fire, Nenya with water, and Vilya with air, though Tolkien’s accounts emphasize their powers of preservation and protection rather than simple elemental magic. Their bearers included Galadriel, Elrond, and Gandalf at different stages of the story.
The total number of principal Rings of Power was twenty: three for Elves, seven for Dwarves, nine for Men, and one master ring for Sauron. The Three were ultimately taken West after the One Ring was destroyed.
