How many Rings of Power were given to the Men of Middle-earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore?

The story behind the answer

Nine Rings of Power were given to the Men of Middle-earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore.

The distribution is summarized in the famous verse about the Rings: three for the Elves, seven for the Dwarves, nine for Mortal Men, and one for the Dark Lord. The Nine human ring-bearers eventually became the Nazgûl, or Ringwraiths, servants of Sauron.

The Rings did not simply make their human owners powerful in an ordinary political sense. Their extended lives and supernatural influence ultimately drew the bearers into Sauron’s control. The individual names of the Nine Men are mostly not given in Tolkien’s published narrative, although the Witch-king of Angmar is identified as their leader.

The number nine is often confused with the seven Rings associated with the Dwarves or the three Rings kept by the Elves. Those groups are part of the same distribution, but only the Nine were given to Men.
