Four number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 came from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack: the Bee Gees’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Stayin’ Alive,” and “Night Fever,” plus Yvonne Elliman’s “If I Can’t Have You.”
The soundtrack was released on November 15, 1977, and became one of the defining records of the disco era. “How Deep Is Your Love” reached No. 1 first, followed by “Stayin’ Alive” and then “Night Fever.” Elliman’s recording of “If I Can’t Have You,” written by the Gibb brothers, supplied the fourth chart-topper. Together, these singles helped make the album a cultural phenomenon.
The number can be confusing because the soundtrack also included earlier Bee Gees hits such as “Jive Talkin’” and “You Should Be Dancing.” Both had already reached No. 1 before the soundtrack was released, so they are not counted among the four new number-one singles generated by the album. The soundtrack itself spent 24 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the US album chart.
