How many novels did Emily Brontë write?

The story behind the answer

Emily Brontë wrote one novel: Wuthering Heights.

Published in 1847 under Emily’s pen name, Ellis Bell, Wuthering Heights is a Gothic novel set among two families living on the Yorkshire moors. Its central story follows the destructive, intense relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, alongside the consequences their choices have for the next generation.

The novel was originally published in a three-volume format, with Anne Brontë’s Agnes Grey occupying the third volume. This arrangement was common in Victorian publishing and can make the book’s original publication history seem more complicated than it was. Wuthering Heights was Emily’s only completed novel.

Emily also wrote poetry, much of it first published in 1846 in a collection produced jointly with Charlotte and Anne. The sisters used the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell to disguise their identities. Emily died of tuberculosis in December 1848, only about a year after her novel appeared. Its reputation grew steadily after her death, and it is now regarded as a classic of English literature.
