How many Nang Songkran daughters appear in the traditional Songkran legend?

The story behind the answer

Seven Nang Songkran daughters appear in the traditional Songkran legend.

The daughters are linked to the seven days of the week. One daughter is associated with each possible weekday on which the traditional New Year may begin. Their names, costumes, vehicles, and symbolic objects vary, and Thai calendars or festival displays may feature the daughter corresponding to that year’s weekday.

The story says that the daughters take turns carrying the severed head of Thao Kabinlaphrom, a figure associated with Brahma. They must handle it carefully because placing it on the ground would cause disaster, while carrying it in the air would dry up the world.

The number seven is therefore not a count of festival days. It refers to the seven daughters and their connection with the seven-day week. Modern Songkran events may present Nang Songkran pageants or parades, but these performances are cultural representations of the legend rather than a literal religious requirement for every celebration.
