Three named hyenas appear in the original film: Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed.
They are spotted hyenas who live in the Elephant Graveyard and become Scar’s allies. Scar recruits them to help overthrow Mufasa and later uses their pack to enforce his rule over the Pride Lands. Shenzi is the sharp-tongued leader, Banzai is impulsive and aggressive, and Ed communicates mainly through manic laughter.
The trio is voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings, respectively. A common mix-up comes from the 2019 remake, which keeps Shenzi but replaces Banzai and Ed with new characters named Kamari and Azizi. The original film’s named hyena group remains the three-character trio.
