What was the production budget of the original 1994 Lion King?

The story behind the answer

The production budget of the original 1994 The Lion King was $45 million.

That figure made the film one of Walt Disney Feature Animation’s major productions at the time. Directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and produced by Don Hahn, it followed Simba’s struggle to reclaim the throne after Scar’s betrayal. Its budget supported extensive hand-drawn animation, elaborate musical sequences, and Hans Zimmer’s orchestral score.

The number is often confused with the budgets of later Lion King projects. Jon Favreau’s 2019 photorealistic computer-animated remake cost far more—about $250 million—because of its much larger digital production and visual-effects requirements. The 1994 film, by contrast, was traditionally animated.

The investment paid off commercially: the original became one of Disney’s biggest animated successes and helped establish The Lion King as a major film, soundtrack, and stage-musical franchise.
