Nine members make up the Fellowship of the Ring in J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel.
The company consists of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf. They are chosen at Rivendell to carry the One Ring toward Mordor and oppose Sauron’s attempt to recover it.
The number nine has symbolic and practical significance in the story. Elrond explains that the Fellowship is meant to answer the Nine Riders, or Nazgûl, who pursue the Ring. The group does not remain together throughout the quest: it breaks apart at Amon Hen after Boromir’s death and Frodo and Sam’s departure toward Mordor.
