Nine members formed the Fellowship of the Ring in Tolkien’s story. The group was created to oppose the Nine Riders and escort the One Ring toward Mordor.
The Fellowship consisted of Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, Pippin Took, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf. Their different backgrounds brought hobbits, Men, an Elf, a Dwarf, and a wizard together.
The company did not remain united for the entire journey. After the breaking of the Fellowship at Amon Hen, its members followed separate paths. Readers sometimes confuse the Fellowship with the nine Nazgûl, but the matching number was deliberate: Tolkien set nine companions against nine Ringwraiths.
