Four main animated Shrek films had been released by the end of 2010.
The four films are Shrek, released in 2001; Shrek 2, released in 2004; Shrek the Third, released in 2007; and Shrek Forever After, released in 2010. Together, these films form the original main series centered on Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and their changing life in the fairy-tale world.
The count excludes the spin-off Puss in Boots, which was released in 2011, and television specials such as Shrek the Halls. It also excludes short films and later franchise projects. This distinction matters because the Shrek brand includes more screen productions than the four numbered main adventures.
Shrek Forever After was marketed as the final chapter of the original series, although later plans and franchise developments led to renewed interest in additional Shrek projects. Counting by release date, the total at the end of 2010 was therefore four main animated features.
