How many levels did the fortified city of Minas Tirith have in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Minas Tirith had seven levels in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

The city was built on a hill and divided into seven ascending circles, each protected by walls. A spur of rock projected from the hill toward the east, cutting through the circles and allowing access toward the citadel at the top.

At the summit stood the Citadel, where the White Tower and important civic buildings were located. The city’s layered design helped make it one of Gondor’s strongest fortresses and gave it a dramatic role during the War of the Ring.

Minas Tirith is sometimes confused with Minas Morgul, its former sister city across the Anduin valley. Minas Morgul was originally called Minas Ithil, while Minas Tirith was originally known as Minas Anor. The two names reflect the contrasting histories of Gondor’s principal fortified cities.
