How many levels did Noah’s Ark have in the Genesis account?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark had three levels.

Genesis 6:16 tells Noah to make the ark with lower, second, and third decks. These three divisions are usually understood as stacked levels within the vessel. The instruction appears alongside details about a window, a door, and the ark’s overall dimensions.

The three-level design is part of the biblical description, not a surviving archaeological specification. No physical ark has been scientifically verified, so reconstructions necessarily depend on interpretation of the text and on assumptions about cubits, timber, supports, and internal space.

The number of levels is sometimes confused with the number of decks shown in modern models or films. Those reconstructions may add ramps, compartments, or other features for practical or visual reasons. Genesis itself gives the concise number: three levels.
