Genesis describes eight human survivors aboard Noah’s Ark.
The group consists of Noah, his wife, their three sons, and the wives of those three sons. Together, these eight people are presented as the human survivors preserved through the flood. Genesis does not give the names of Noah’s wife or his daughters-in-law.
The three sons are Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Their presence matters to the later genealogy in Genesis, which traces nations and peoples through Noah’s family after the flood. The text therefore connects the ark story with the larger origin and ancestry narratives in the Book of Genesis.
Some retellings use larger numbers because they include additional relatives, servants, or unnamed people. Those additions are not stated in the Genesis account. The number eight refers specifically to the people described as entering and surviving aboard the ark.
