How many human passengers does Genesis name as entering Noah's Ark?

The story behind the answer

Genesis names eight human passengers entering Noah's Ark: Noah, his wife, their three sons, and their sons' wives.

Genesis 7:13 lists Noah, Shem, Ham, Japheth, Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons. Counting them produces eight people. The New Testament also refers to “eight persons” being brought safely through the Flood in 1 Peter 3:20.

The family structure matters because the Genesis account presents Noah's household as the surviving human family after the Flood. It does not give the wives' names in the biblical text. Later Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions sometimes assign names to them, but those names are not part of Genesis's passenger list.

Another common error is counting only Noah and his three sons, or assuming that the ark carried a much larger community. The explicit Genesis list is limited to eight named family roles. The animals are described separately, so they are not included in this human total.
