Katie Ledecky won four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. She won the 200-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle and 4×200-meter freestyle relay for the United States, while also earning silver in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay.
Her individual victories were especially notable because she won three freestyle distances at the same Games. In the 400-meter freestyle, she set an Olympic record in qualifying and a world record in the final with a time of 3:56.46. In the 800-meter freestyle, she won in a world-record 8:04.79, finishing more than 11 seconds ahead of the silver medalist.
Ledecky’s Rio performance made her the second-most decorated athlete at those Games, behind Michael Phelps. Her four golds also matched the highest single-Olympics gold total by an American woman at that time. The answer is sometimes confused with her total number of medals in Rio, which was five rather than four.
