How many generations of the Ford Mustang have been produced as of 2025?

The story behind the answer

As of 2025, Ford has produced seven generations of the Mustang.

The seventh generation, known by its S650 code, began production in 2023 and is sold primarily as a 2024-and-later model. Ford revealed it at a special event during the 2022 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It retained the Mustang’s front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout while introducing updated styling, electronics and powertrains.

The seven generations span more than six decades. The first ran from 1964 to 1973, followed by the downsized Mustang II, the Fox-body generation, the SN-95/New Edge era, the retro-styled fifth generation, and the sixth-generation Mustang introduced for 2015. The seventh generation continues the nameplate’s production run rather than replacing it with an electric successor.

The Mustang Mach-E does not count as an eighth generation. It is a separate electric crossover in the Mustang family, while the traditional coupe and convertible define the numbered Mustang generations. Likewise, special versions such as the Shelby GT500, Mach 1 and Dark Horse are variants within generations, not generations of their own.
