How many different fish can be caught in Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

The story behind the answer

Animal Crossing: New Horizons features 80 different fish that players can catch.

The fish are recorded in the Critterpedia and can be donated to Blathers at the museum, sold for Bells, or displayed in tanks. They are not all available at once: each species has its own months, hours, and preferred location, such as a river, pond, ocean, river mouth, clifftop river, or pier.

The total includes familiar catches such as sea bass, carp, and goldfish alongside rarer species including the coelacanth, barreleye, golden trout, and mahi-mahi. Some fish require specific conditions; for example, the coelacanth appears in the sea only while it is raining.

A common mistake is to count every aquatic creature in the game. New Horizons also has a separate collection of sea creatures obtained by swimming and diving, and those are not part of the 80-fish total. The number refers to distinct fish entries available for the game’s fish collection, not the number a player can catch in one day.
