How many countries shared victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969?

The story behind the answer

Four countries shared victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1969.

The contest was held in Madrid, Spain, on 29 March 1969. Spain, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France all finished with 18 points. Under the rules then in force, no tiebreak procedure existed, so all four were declared winners.

The four winning entries were Spain’s “Vivo cantando,” the United Kingdom’s “Boom Bang-a-Bang,” the Netherlands’ “De troubadour” and France’s “Un jour, un enfant.” Spain’s Salomé, the United Kingdom’s Lulu, the Netherlands’ Lenny Kuhr and France’s Frida Boccara therefore became joint winners.

The result created a practical problem for the next host broadcaster. Eurovision subsequently introduced tie-breaking provisions, and the unusual four-way result remains the contest’s largest shared victory. It is different from a narrow win decided by a later tiebreak rule.
