How many children did Roald Dahl have?

The story behind the answer

Roald Dahl had five children.

Dahl and his first wife, Patricia Neal, had five children: Olivia, Chantal, Theo, Ophelia, and Lucy. Their family life included both privilege and tragedy, experiences that informed some of Dahl’s later writing and charitable work.

Their daughter Olivia died of measles encephalitis in 1962 at the age of seven. Dahl later became an advocate for measles vaccination, and the tragedy influenced his concern with childhood health. His son Theo also suffered a serious head injury as a baby after a taxi accident, but survived.

Dahl and Neal divorced in 1983. Dahl married Felicity Crosland later that year, and they remained married until his death in 1990. The number five refers to Dahl’s children in total, not to the number of children he had with each spouse.
