How many children did Albert Einstein have?

The story behind the answer

Albert Einstein had three children.

All three were born from his relationship with Mileva Marić: daughter Lieserl and sons Hans Albert and Eduard. Lieserl’s existence became known through correspondence published decades later, adding an important and often overlooked part of Einstein’s family history.

Lieserl was born in early 1902 while Marić was visiting her parents in Novi Sad. What happened to her is uncertain; letters suggest she may have been given up for adoption or died in infancy. Einstein and Marić married in January 1903, and their son Hans Albert was born in Bern in May 1904.

Their second son, Eduard, was born in Zurich in July 1910. Einstein’s second marriage, to Elsa Einstein, produced no additional children. This is why the canonical answer is three, even though Lieserl’s fate and the circumstances surrounding her early life remain unresolved.
