How many Academy Awards did Martin Scorsese’s Hugo win?

The story behind the answer

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo won five Academy Awards.

Released in 2011, Hugo is a 3D adventure film about an orphan who lives inside Paris’s Gare Montparnasse railway station. Asa Butterfield plays Hugo Cabret, while Chloë Grace Moretz plays Isabelle and Ben Kingsley portrays filmmaker Georges Méliès.

At the 84th Academy Awards, Hugo won five Oscars: Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects. It received eleven nominations overall, the most of any film at that ceremony, but it did not win Best Picture or Best Director.

The film is also a tribute to the origins of cinema. Its portrayal of Méliès draws attention to his pioneering effects, fantastical staging, and influential 1902 film A Trip to the Moon. Hugo was adapted from Brian Selznick’s illustrated novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Its Oscar haul is sometimes confused with its nomination total, which was more than twice as high.
