Amadeus won eight Academy Awards from its 1984 nominations.
The historical drama received 11 nominations at the 58th Academy Awards and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Director for Miloš Forman, Best Actor for F. Murray Abraham and Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Shaffer.
The film presents a fictionalized rivalry between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. Although Salieri narrates the story, the movie is not a literal biography; it adapts Shaffer’s stage play and uses dramatic inventions to explore jealousy, genius and faith.
Amadeus also won awards for costume design, film editing, makeup and production design. Tom Hulce played Mozart, while Abraham portrayed Salieri. The film was released in 1984, with a longer director’s cut titled Amadeus: The Director’s Cut released in 2002.
