How long was Noah’s Ark, measured in cubits in Genesis?

The story behind the answer

In Genesis, Noah’s Ark was 300 cubits long. Genesis 6:15 gives the vessel’s principal dimensions as 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height.

A cubit was an ancient unit based broadly on the length of a forearm, so its modern equivalent varied by culture and period. Using common estimates, 300 cubits is roughly 135 metres, or about 450 feet, but the exact modern conversion cannot be certain.

The biblical proportions make the Ark six times longer than its width and ten times longer than its height. Readers sometimes convert the dimensions too precisely, but Genesis supplies an ancient unit rather than a fixed metric measurement. The text also describes three decks, rooms, and an opening near the top.
