Honiara is the capital of which island country in Oceania?
Answer
Solomon Islands
Answer
Solomon Islands
Honiara is the capital of the Solomon Islands, an island country in Oceania.
The city stands on the northwestern coast of Guadalcanal, one of the country’s largest islands. It is also the Solomon Islands’ largest urban centre and contains the national government, major institutions, the port at Point Cruz, and Honiara International Airport. In the 2019 census, Honiara had 129,569 residents.
Honiara became the administrative capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate in 1952, replacing the earlier administrative centre at Tulagi. It remained the capital when the Solomon Islands became independent in July 1978. The city’s modern growth was strongly influenced by infrastructure built during the Second World War.
The airport area east of central Honiara was the site of Henderson Field and intense fighting during the 1942 Guadalcanal Campaign. That history can cause confusion with the country’s geography: Honiara is on Guadalcanal, but it is the capital of the entire Solomon Islands nation, not merely of Guadalcanal Province. The country should also not be confused with the Solomon Islands archipelago’s individual islands or provinces.
