Hip hop and R&B artist Willie Maxwell II is better known by the stage name Fetty Wap.
Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Maxwell began releasing music under the name Fetty Wap in the early 2010s. “Fetty” is commonly explained as slang for money, while “Wap” pays tribute to rapper Gucci Mane, whose nickname is Guwop. Some sources list his full birth name as Willie Junior Maxwell II, but that variation does not change the identity or the answer.
Fetty Wap became widely known through “Trap Queen,” a melodic 2014 single about loyalty, romance, and the drug trade. The song grew from an independent release into a major hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2015. His self-titled debut album followed that year and included other successful songs such as “679” and “My Way.”
A common mix-up is confusing Fetty Wap with the title of his debut album, Fetty Wap, or with the nickname “Fetty Guwap,” which he has also used. The artist’s distinctive style blends rapping with sung melodies, placing him at the intersection of hip hop, trap, and contemporary R&B.
