For which 1967 film did Yves Saint Laurent design the costumes?

The story behind the answer

Yves Saint Laurent designed the costumes for the 1967 film Belle de Jour.

Directed by Luis Buñuel, Belle de Jour stars Catherine Deneuve as Séverine Serizy, an affluent young woman leading a secret double life. Saint Laurent created Séverine’s wardrobe, translating the character’s outward restraint and hidden sensuality into sharply controlled clothing.

The film’s best-known looks include a black vinyl trench coat with knit sleeves and a severe black dress finished with ivory cuffs and collar. These clothes became inseparable from Deneuve’s screen image and helped demonstrate how fashion could define a character’s psychology rather than merely decorate a scene.

Belle de Jour was adapted from Joseph Kessel’s 1928 novel and became one of Buñuel’s most acclaimed films. Viewers sometimes confuse Saint Laurent’s work here with Hubert de Givenchy’s designs for Audrey Hepburn, but Givenchy dressed Hepburn in films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Saint Laurent and Deneuve continued their creative relationship in later films, including Heartbeat and Mississippi Mermaid.
