For the 2015 model year, the Ford F-150 received an aluminum-intensive body.
Ford redesigned the F-150 for its thirteenth generation and replaced much of the previous steel body with high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloys. The change reduced vehicle weight while retaining a high-strength steel frame. Ford presented the redesign as a way to improve fuel economy, payload capability, and towing performance.
The aluminum construction attracted considerable attention because full-size American pickups had traditionally relied heavily on steel body panels. The F-150 still used steel in important structural areas, including its frame, so it was not an all-aluminum vehicle.
The change applied to the regular F-150, while Ford’s heavier Super Duty trucks followed a different construction strategy at that time. The 2015 redesign became one of the most significant engineering changes in the F-Series’ history.
