Flo Rida’s 2009 single “Right Round” heavily samples the 1984 song “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)” by Dead or Alive. The recurring hook draws on the English band’s signature synth-pop and Hi-NRG hit.
Dead or Alive released “You Spin Me Round” in November 1984 as the lead single from their album Youthquake. Led by vocalist Pete Burns, the band worked with the production team Stock Aitken Waterman, whose polished dance-pop sound helped define many major British hits of the era.
“Right Round,” released in 2009, reworked the older song’s recognizable chorus for a pop-rap setting. Flo Rida performed the track with guest vocals from Kesha, who was initially uncredited on the American release. The song became Flo Rida’s second Billboard Hot 100 number one and stayed at the top for six weeks.
The track is often casually called a cover, but it is more precise to describe it as a sample-based adaptation or interpolation. “Right Round” adds new lyrics, production, and vocals while incorporating elements of the earlier recording and melody.
