Elton John's festive 1973 single is titled "Step into ___."

The story behind the answer

Elton John's festive 1973 single is titled “Step into Christmas.” The song was written by Elton John and his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin, then released on 23 November 1973 with “Ho, Ho, Ho (Who’d Be a Turkey at Christmas)” as its B-side.

The recording was made at London’s Morgan Studios on 11 November 1973 and produced by Gus Dudgeon. Its dense, compressed sound deliberately imitates Phil Spector’s famous “wall of sound” production style, giving the track its bright, crowded holiday feel.

Although it originally peaked at only number 24 on the UK singles chart, the song became a recurring Christmas favourite. It later reached the UK top 10 in 2018 and climbed higher in subsequent years. In the United States, it topped the Billboard Christmas Singles chart.

A common mix-up is treating “Step into Christmas” as an album title. It began as a standalone single and was later added to reissues and compilations, including the 1995 remaster of Caribou. Two versions also exist, including a television performance variant with different vocals.
