Elton John's 1974 cover of which Beatles song, featuring John Lennon, reached number one in the US?

The story behind the answer

Elton John’s 1974 cover of “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,” featuring John Lennon, reached number one in the United States. The single was released on 15 November 1974 and became a two-week number-one hit on the US Billboard pop chart in January 1975.

The song was originally recorded by the Beatles for their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Lennon wrote it primarily after being inspired by a drawing made by his young son Julian, who described it as “Lucy—in the sky with diamonds.” Lennon also associated the song’s dreamlike imagery with Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland.

For Elton John’s version, Lennon contributed guitar and backing vocals under the pseudonym Dr. Winston O’Boogie, using his middle name. The collaboration followed John’s appearance on Lennon’s “Whatever Gets You thru the Night,” which had also reached number one.

The cover topped the Canadian chart as well and was certified gold in the United States. It is often confused with the Beatles’ original, but the question refers specifically to Elton John’s later recording with Lennon’s participation.
