Answer
That's What Friends Are For
Elton John joined Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder on Dionne Warwick’s 1985 charity single “That’s What Friends Are For.”
The recording was released by Dionne Warwick and Friends to raise money for AIDS research and prevention. Alongside Warwick, Elton John, Knight, and Wonder shared vocal duties, creating one of the most recognizable benefit collaborations of the 1980s.
The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager and had originally been recorded by Rod Stewart for the 1982 film Night Shift. The 1985 charity version became the best-known recording and raised more than $3 million for its cause.
Elton John played piano, while Stevie Wonder contributed harmonica as well as vocals. The track is often confused with “We Are the World,” another major 1985 charity recording, but that song involved the ensemble USA for Africa and did not feature this four-artist lineup.
