Answer
Billy Elliot the Musical
Answer
Billy Elliot the Musical
Elton John composed the music for Billy Elliot the Musical, the stage story about a working-class boy who dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. Lee Hall wrote the book and lyrics, adapting his screenplay for the 2000 film Billy Elliot.
The musical is set in County Durham during the 1984–85 coal miners' strike. Billy, a motherless eleven-year-old, discovers ballet while attending classes at a community centre. His talent conflicts with his father's expectations and the economic pressures facing the mining community.
Billy Elliot the Musical opened in London's West End on 31 March 2005 and later premiered on Broadway in 2008. Its songs include “The Stars Look Down,” “Solidarity,” “Electricity” and “Once We Were Kings.”
The production became a major awards success. It won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and the 2009 Tony Award for Best Musical. John was nominated for Best Original Score on Broadway, while the show's music also earned him a Drama Desk Award.
