Don't is the 2015 breakout hit single by which R&B artist?

The story behind the answer

“Don’t” is the 2015 breakout hit single by R&B artist Bryson Tiller. The song became the defining early success of the Louisville, Kentucky, singer’s career and introduced his blend of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, and atmospheric “trap soul” production to a wide audience.

Tiller first uploaded “Don’t” to SoundCloud in 2014, reportedly after recording it in his living room. Its intimate, conflicted lyrics and minimalist production attracted online attention before the track was officially released as a single on May 20, 2015. It later appeared on Tiller’s debut studio album, Trapsoul, released that October.

The song’s success helped establish Tiller as one of the major new R&B voices of the mid-2010s. “Don’t” reached No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became his first major charting hit. A music video followed in October 2015, further expanding the song’s reach.

A common mix-up is Ed Sheeran’s separate 2014 single also titled “Don’t.” Tiller’s song is the one associated with Trapsoul and the rise of his R&B-rap style; his later hit “Exchange” was another track from the same album.
