Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg both appeared in a 2013 PSA for Code.org.
The video, titled “What Most Schools Don’t Teach,” promoted computer science education and encouraged students to learn coding. It featured several technology leaders and public figures explaining how programming shaped their careers and why computer science should be taught more widely in schools.
Code.org was founded in 2013 by brothers Hadi Partovi and Ali Partovi as a nonprofit organization focused on expanding access to computer science education. Its campaign argued that coding is a foundational skill, not merely a specialist subject for future software engineers.
The PSA helped launch Code.org into the public spotlight. Later in 2013, the organization introduced the Hour of Code, a campaign that gave students a short, beginner-friendly introduction to programming. The video is sometimes described as a commercial or advocacy video rather than a traditional public-service announcement, but Code.org is the nonprofit it promoted.
