Besides snack and appetizer, nachos can be served as what course?

The story behind the answer

Besides being a snack or appetizer, nachos can be served as a main course.

The simplest nachos may consist of tortilla chips covered with melted cheese or cheese sauce, making them suitable as a snack or starter. More substantial versions add ingredients such as ground beef, chicken, beans, or other proteins, along with vegetables and condiments. Those loaded combinations can be filling enough to function as a full meal.

This distinction explains why nachos appear in several places on a menu. Stadium or cinema nachos are usually quick snacks made with chips and prepared cheese sauce. Restaurant “loaded nachos” are more likely to include meat, refried beans, jalapeños, salsa, sour cream, and guacamole, making them closer to a shared entrée or main course.

“Main course” does not mean every plate of nachos is intended as a meal. Serving size and toppings determine how the dish is categorized. Nachos are also sometimes adapted into specialty versions, including barbecue nachos and poutine nachos.
