Answer
Red Ensign
Answer
Red Ensign
Bermuda's flag is based on which British maritime ensign? The Red Ensign. Its design places the Union Flag in the canton and Bermuda's coat of arms in the fly.
Bermuda first adopted this red-ensign design on 4 October 1910. Unlike most British Overseas Territories, which commonly use Blue Ensign-based flags for general display, Bermuda uses its Red Ensign-based flag on land as well as at sea.
The coat of arms shows a red lion holding a shield depicting the wreck of the Sea Venture, the shipwreck traditionally linked to Bermuda's early English history in 1609. The Latin motto, “Quo Fata Ferunt,” means “Whither the Fates Carry.”
The Red Ensign's maritime background explains the question's wording: it was assigned to British merchant shipping in 1864, while the White Ensign became associated with the Royal Navy and the Blue Ensign with government and specially authorized vessels. Bermuda's flag was modified in 1999, when the coat of arms was enlarged.
