Before the Dodgers' 2025 repeat, which MLB team last won back-to-back World Series titles?

The story behind the answer

Before the Dodgers’ 2025 repeat, the New York Yankees were the last MLB team to win back-to-back World Series titles.

The Yankees won three consecutive championships from 1998 through 2000. Their 1999 title was the middle victory in that run, when they defeated the Atlanta Braves in four games. Because the Yankees had also won the 1998 World Series, they were already defending champions entering the 1999 season.

The Dodgers’ 2025 championship over the Toronto Blue Jays ended a 25-year gap between repeat winners. Los Angeles had won the 2024 World Series, then successfully defended that title in 2025. The Yankees’ achievement was even broader: their 1998–2000 run remains the most recent World Series three-peat. The Cincinnati Reds were the last National League team to repeat before Los Angeles, winning in 1975 and 1976.
