Answer
Grossglockner
Answer
Grossglockner
Austria’s Grossglockner High Alpine Road is named after the Grossglockner mountain.
At 3,798 meters, the Grossglockner is Austria’s highest mountain and the dominant peak of the Hohe Tauern range. The road itself is a scenic alpine route crossing the historic Hochtor Pass and connecting the Salzburg region with Carinthia.
The road was built between 1930 and 1935 under plans associated with engineer Franz Wallack. It was designed both as an employment project during Austria’s economic crisis and as a route to encourage motor tourism. The first full crossing by automobile took place in 1934, and the road opened officially in 1935.
The mountain and the pass are different geographic features: the road does not crest on the summit of Grossglockner. Its highest main crossing is Hochtor Pass, while branches lead to viewpoints such as Edelweißspitze and Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe.
