At which venue did Green Day play its first live performance?

Green Day played its first live performance at Rod’s Hickory Pit in Vallejo, California.

The show took place on October 17, 1987, during the band’s earliest period. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were both 15 years old, and the group was still developing its identity and lineup. At that stage, the band had formed under the name Sweet Children after initially playing as Desecrated Youth.

Rod’s Hickory Pit was a local restaurant and an unlikely starting point for a band that would later headline stadiums. Soon afterward, drummer John Kiffmeyer—better known as Al Sobrante—joined the group, replacing Raj Punjabi. Sean Hughes also departed, and Dirnt shifted from guitar to bass.

A frequent mix-up is 924 Gilman Street, the influential Berkeley punk club where Green Day later built its local following. Roseland Ballroom was a much later concert venue, while Berkeley Repertory Theatre was associated with the American Idiot musical, not the band’s first gig.
