At which university did C.S. Lewis teach from 1954 until his death?
Answer
Cambridge University
Answer
Cambridge University
C.S. Lewis taught at Cambridge University from 1954 until his death.
Lewis became the first holder of the Mediaeval and Renaissance English chair at Cambridge in 1954. He had previously spent most of his academic career at Oxford, where he was a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College and taught English literature for many years.
His Cambridge appointment did not end his connection with Oxford. Lewis continued to live near Oxford and remained associated with the literary discussion group known as the Inklings, which included J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams. His Cambridge work focused on medieval and Renaissance literature, subjects central to his scholarship.
Some accounts state only that Lewis was an Oxford academic, which is accurate for much of his career but incomplete. He taught at Cambridge for the final years of his life, from 1954 until 1963. He died on November 22, 1963, the same day that U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
