At which university did C.S. Lewis teach English literature from 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis taught English literature at the University of Cambridge from 1954.

In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the newly created Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He continued teaching at Oxford while taking up the Cambridge position, so his academic career involved both universities during his later years.

Lewis had spent most of his professional life at Oxford. He was a Fellow and tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford, from 1925, and he taught English there for decades before moving to Cambridge. This makes Oxford and Cambridge easy to confuse in questions about his employment.

His Cambridge appointment recognized his expertise in medieval and Renaissance literature, including works such as those by John Milton. Lewis held the Cambridge chair until his death in 1963, and the appointment formed the final major stage of his academic career.
