At which university did C.S. Lewis teach before joining Cambridge University?

The story behind the answer

Before joining Cambridge University, C.S. Lewis taught at the University of Oxford.

Lewis held academic posts at Oxford for decades. He became a fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925 and remained there until 1954. His Oxford career included teaching, supervising students, and writing many of his major works.

In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the newly created chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Thus, both universities were important to his academic life, but Oxford came first and occupied the longer period.

The wording can cause confusion because Lewis is often described simply as an Oxford professor, while his Cambridge appointment was also prestigious. Oxford is especially associated with his friendships with J.R.R. Tolkien and the Inklings, a literary discussion group that met largely in Oxford.
