At which university did C.S. Lewis teach as a fellow and tutor?
Answer
University of Oxford
Answer
University of Oxford
C.S. Lewis taught as a fellow and tutor at the University of Oxford.
He became a fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925 and remained there until 1954. His Oxford years included extensive teaching, scholarship, fiction writing, and participation in literary discussions with friends such as J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams.
Lewis held a post at Cambridge University from 1954 until his death, serving as the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. This later appointment is why Lewis is associated with both universities, but Oxford was his principal academic home for nearly three decades.
His Oxford career also shaped his public identity. He delivered lectures, wrote literary criticism, and developed many of the ideas later expressed in his Christian apologetics. The Oxford setting appears frequently in accounts of the Inklings, the informal literary group that met mainly at The Eagle and Child pub.
