At which university did C.S. Lewis hold the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English?
Answer
University of Cambridge
Answer
University of Cambridge
C.S. Lewis held the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge.
In 1954, Lewis was appointed to the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University. He became a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and held the chair until his death in 1963.
This appointment came after nearly three decades at Oxford’s Magdalen College, where he had been a Fellow and tutor. The move did not erase his Oxford connections: Lewis continued to live at The Kilns near Oxford and traveled to Cambridge for his academic duties.
The title of the chair reflects Lewis’s scholarly specialization. His academic work focused on medieval and Renaissance literature, including literary history, allegory, and the development of English writing. The most common mistake is to identify Oxford as the university where he held this particular professorship; Oxford was his earlier institution.
