At which university did C.S. Lewis hold an English literature professorship from 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis held an English literature professorship at the University of Cambridge from 1954.

In 1954, Lewis became the first holder of the newly established Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He had already spent most of his academic career at Oxford, where he was a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College from 1925.

The two colleges have similar names, which creates a frequent source of confusion. Lewis’s Oxford position was at Magdalen College, while his Cambridge chair was at Magdalene College. The spelling difference identifies the separate institutions.

Lewis continued to live at The Kilns near Oxford after taking the Cambridge post and traveled between the two university cities. His Cambridge appointment recognized his scholarship in medieval and Renaissance literature, fields that also shaped his imaginative writing and Christian thought. He remained associated with both universities until his death in 1963.
