At which university did C.S. Lewis hold a professorship from 1954?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis held a professorship at the University of Cambridge from 1954. He became the first holder of the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge, a position he retained until his death.

Before Cambridge, Lewis had spent most of his academic career at the University of Oxford. He taught English at Magdalen College, Oxford, and became known for scholarship on medieval and Renaissance literature. His Cambridge appointment gave formal recognition to the literary expertise that also informed his popular writing.

Lewis continued to live near Oxford after taking the Cambridge chair, so the appointment did not mean that he abandoned his Oxford home or all Oxford connections. He also remained associated with literary discussion groups and former colleagues. This distinction matters because Lewis is often described simply as an Oxford don, even though his final professorship belonged to Cambridge.
