At which university did C.S. Lewis become the first holder of the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature?
Answer
University of Cambridge
Answer
University of Cambridge
C.S. Lewis became the first holder of the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at the University of Cambridge.
Lewis took up the Cambridge professorship in 1954 after nearly three decades teaching at Magdalen College, Oxford. The position was based at Magdalene College, Cambridge, whose name is spelled differently from Oxford’s Magdalen College.
His appointment did not end his connection with Oxford immediately. He continued to live at The Kilns, his Oxford home, and traveled to Cambridge for his academic duties. His lectures and scholarship remained focused on medieval and Renaissance literature, subjects that had shaped his professional career.
This fact is often remembered incorrectly because Lewis is strongly associated with Oxford. Oxford was where he taught for most of his career and where the Inklings met, but Cambridge was the university that created and awarded him this specific chair.
